– First Meeting on the 16th of October at 10:00, Room 2.11.100 –
What if intelligence is not rare, but radically plural?
In this class, we will explore non-human forms and posthuman perspectives on intelligence. We will examine topics such as synthetic cognition, vegetal sentience, machinic perception, and emergent intelligence in collective swarms. By examining a wide range of intelligences, including animal, algorithmic, artificial neural networks, bacterial and mechanical, we will question the dominance of human cognitive norms.
This will be our starting point for exploring artistic perspectives on other forms of intelligence. These include experimental tools, speculative devices, installations, machines and objects that sense, interpret or perform intelligence in unconventional ways, as well as performances.
The class will be accompanied by a series of workshops and hands-on sessions on the subject and relevant technologies.
(Details will follow.)
The class takes place on Wednesdays from 10:00 to 18:00. For MA students, it can be taken as a Media Design (M-MD) or Special Topics (M-MA-2) class (12 CPs in total). A small number of places are reserved for BA students who wish to take the class as an Individual Project (B-MG-32). Maximum 15 participants.
Application: Please express your interest in the class by sending me a short email (r.baecker@hfk-bremen.de).
