– The first meeting is scheduled for the 20th of October at 10:00. –
Drawing Machines (dt. Zeichenmaschinen) have a long tradition in the arts dominantly in the realm of kinetic and new media art. Since technology entered artist practices, artists and designers have started to build their own drawing machines. Drawing machines do not only operate with ink or paint on paper but with manifold materials and media with different strategies and gestures. Drawing machines operate in time and space. Drawing machines negotiate between artistic gestures and technological possibilities. Drawing machines can be poetic, playful or critical or all at the same time. Artistic drawing machines avoid standardization and are deeply idiosyncratic. Technical limitations and the inability of the artist articulate strange and beautiful worlds of signs and symbols.
The course offers a historical and technological introduction to the topic. At the center of the course stands the development of small and large “drawing machines”. The class is accompanied by a series of skill workshops. e.g. microcontroller (arduino), electronics, openscad, etc. You can work alone or in a team.
