New Material Imaginaries

DM.M-MA-2, MA Media Design/Special Topic in Digital Media / SS 2021
Time: Thursday 10:00 - 14:00 and 14:00 - 18:00 / Room: 2.10.100

– First meeting on the 15th of April at 10:00h –

New Material Imaginaries is a research platform to investigate, sketch, probe, and reflect individual new materials and matter for artistic (and design) projects. The research platform aims to build a wide and diverse portfolio of different materials, methods, and approaches. Our focus is directed on the individual material agencies their aesthetic potentials and their imaginary qualities. Influenced by an object-oriented ontology, agential realism, and a new understanding of the thing-world we want to think of our investigations as a dialog with matter - Accepting the individual properties and agencies of matter rather than forcing our directed expectations on them. We will dive deep into material research and technology accompanied by the theoretical, fictional and artistic guidance of Karen Barad, Andrei Tarkowski, Timothy Morton, Gaston Bachelard, Ursula K. le Guin, Ilya Prigogine, Isabelle Stengers, Hans Haacke and more.

Artistic material research can be a time-intensive process, often frustrating and discouraging, but eventually resulting in a great fundament for forthcoming projects and a new dialog with things.

Yes, the pandemic is still present. And it is hard to predict how the coming semester will turn out. Online only or partly at HfK or outside. Never the less I want this class to be hands-on. In the worst case at your home with online meetings, but hopefully, even if we can’t work completely together as a class at HfK, you can use the facilities/studios to work physically on your projects. We can also make use of our Portable Electronic Workshops (PEW!).

organisatorial information

  • The class consists of two “Special Topic in Digital Media/Media Design“ courses. You have to participate (and register through ARTIST) in both classes: Thursday 10:00 - 14:00 and 14:00 - 18:00 which will earn you a total 12 CP. The class is limited to a maximum of 15 participants. If the course will have more applications the participans are selected by a random procedure (lottery).

  • The course is planned as an online class! The first meeting will be on MS Teams on the 15th of April 10:00. Depending on the corona situation we will switch if possible partly to in-situ meeting at HfK or outsite (hybrid).

  • The course will have two student tutors to support you with technical questions and workshops.

  • We are going to setup a website ( ) to document our research and progress. Futher we will explore forms of making our reseach visible to a general public through differen formats. Students should feel comfortable about sharing their progress and idears also outside of the class.

In order to join the class, I ask you to write a short essay (approx 100 words) that expresses your interest/ambition in this class’s topic and practice by the 13th of April 23:59 (CET). Please send it by mail to
