Radical Machines

M-MD, MA Media Design / WS 2024/25
Time: Wednesday 10:00 - 18:00 / Room: 2.10.100

Throughout the history of technology, inventions and machines have opened up new ways of seeing, understanding and shaping the world. The printing press is a radical machine, as is the digital computer. Now these inventions and machines have become part of a global infrastructure that maintains a certain dynamic of power. The reality of the Internet, for example, has erased the ideals of an open and democratic network.

In this class we want to think about new radical machines that are capable of creating new disruptions and challenging ideas of technology and the machinic. These machines can be a hack, a poetic apparatus, a tool, a software, a performance, an instrument, a deconstruction and many other things. Furthermore, the class offers the opportunity to complete/document a project in progress that fits into the field/area of experimental design/new technologies.

Each participant will research, design, experiment, and implement an individual or group project that will be presented and documented in the form of a presentation or exhibition at the end of the semester.
